Cranston's First Lady launches first annual "First Lady's Art Awards"

CRANSTON, RI—A lover of the arts, Cranston’s First Lady Barbara Ann Fenton is inviting local artists to share their creative spirit this holiday season by launching the first annual “First Lady’s Arts Awards” in City Hall.

Soon, City Hall will be filled with paintings, drawings and collages and several winners will get the chance to go out to Newport Creamery for ice cream with the First Lady and her husband, Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung.

The theme is “Holidays in Cranston” and Cranston artists of all ages are welcome to submit a two-dimensional work of art using any medium, from finger paints and watercolors to chalk and ink (and everything in between).

“I can’t wait to see City Hall filled with color and creativity from the community once submissions start rolling in,” Fenton said. “This is a great activity for Cranston students on their holiday break and is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the arts together in a public space.”

Entries can be dropped off at the Mayor’s Office on the third floor of City Hall during business hours until Jan. 3 and every work will be put on display in the building through mid-February.

Winners will be selected from the following age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 7, 8 to 9, 10 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 and older. There is no age limit.

Submissions shouldn’t be larger than 11x14 inches. The name, age, address and parent contact information for the artist must be included on the back of the submission.

Entries will be available to be picked up after being displayed at City Hall in mid-February.

10th Annual Rhode Island Small Business Economic Summit To Be Held Friday, January 6, 2017 at Bryant University

The U.S. Small Business Administration and the Center for Women & Enterprise will partner to host the 10th Annual Rhode Island Economic Summit. This small business strategic planning conference will be held on January 6, 2017 at Bryant University in Smithfield.
The Rhode Island Economic Summit provides the venue for state elected officials and small business owners to engage in a dialogue and exchange ideas about issues of importance to small business in Rhode Island. The goal is to formulate and present a small business advocacy package designed and approved by summit participants. This is a great opportunity to speak directly to legislative leaders who can facilitate a positive business climate.
More than 175 small business owners, business leaders, and elected officials participated in the 2016 summit. This year’s forum will address business concerns and recommend solutions in seven key business areas: taxes and budget, health care, regulations, economic development, main street issues, workforce development, and emerging markets.
Here are the descriptions:
Health Care:
Works to create a cost effective, affordable healthcare system to Small and Medium size business. The committee works on issues to customized options including employee choice and defined contribution to help business owners stabilize their bottom line.
Regulations:
Identifies regulatory changes which can make Rhode Island an easier place to do business while sustaining public safety. State rules impacting labor management, construction/real estate development, energy, education and general cost of doing business are frequent areas of concern.
Tax & Budget:
Covers all state tax issues with the goal of making the RI tax system more competitive regionally and nationally. Concentrates on improving incentives that would contribute to a more vibrant RI Small Business economy, as well as addressing issues that affect the annual state budget.
Workforce Development:
Focuses on the skills gap needed to fulfill workplace requirements and the education and training employees needed to become gainfully employed. These necessary skills will eliminate significant barriers to employment.
Economic Development:
Covers issues including access to capital, small business assistance programs including counseling and training, developmental and business development issues facing small businesses.
Emerging Markets:
Minority businesses are starting up at unprecedented rates, and we can expect these businesses to play a key role in the health of our economy.  Minority business start-ups and increased spending power within minority communities are creating new business opportunities for companies to grow their market.  The committee will focus on understanding cultural issues, how to market correctly to this growing demographic and gaining access to capital.
Main Street:
Focuses on local initiatives to revitalize Rhode Island's "main streets" by leveraging local assets and making thoughtful re-development and economy-boosting investments.

Cranston's tree lighting ceremony Dec. 7

CRANSTON, RI—Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung invites Cranston residents to the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and holiday celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The festivities begin at around 6 p.m. with holiday music performed by members of the Cranston High School East and BASICS Choirs, including a trumpet solo by Domenic Kaffenberger.

Mayor Fung will flip the switch and the tree in front of City Hall will be lit up to mark the beginning of the holiday season before a special visit from Santa Claus himself at around 6:45 p.m. Ole’ Saint Nick will arrive by special escort aboard a Cranston Fire Department fire truck.

The annual city tradition brings together the entire Cranston community for an evening of merriment and cheer, complete with cookies and hot chocolate doled out by Senior elves.

“I always look forward to our annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony because it brings smiles to childrens’ faces,” Mayor Fung said. “It’s great celebration of the holiday season, and a chance to feel good about the holidays, our city and our neighbors.”

Parking for the event is available behind City Hall, located at 869 Park Ave. Motorists should be advised that Park Avenue is closed for most of the event and to seek alternate routes.

Mayor Fung thanked all the city employees and volunteers who make the event possible every year.
