Mayor Fung’s Statement on the Passing of Mayor Vincent A. Buddy Cianci, Jr.
January 28, 2016- Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung issued the following statement in regards to the passing of former Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr.:
“Today, I ordered the city flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Cranston native and former Providence Mayor Vincent A. "Buddy" Cianci Jr.
Mayor Cianci was a true Rhode Island icon who was larger than life. Most Rhode Islanders, including me, our own "Buddy" story.” said Mayor Fung

Most importantly, he touched many individuals and was always willing to give of himself to many worthy charitable causes. We will never forget his life fully lived. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

State Senate Confirms Joseph Dowling to Serve on Arts Council Board

(Providence, RI – January 27, 2016)

The Rhode Island State Senate confirmed the appointment of Dr. Joseph Dowling of Narragansett to the board of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA). Dowling was appointed by Governor Gina M. Raimondo to fill the remaining term of David Wax, who passed away last year. Dowling joins the thirteen-member governing body of the State Arts Council, the state agency responsible for support of the arts in communities throughout the state.

Dr. Joseph Dowling is a past Board Chair and a current board member of Trinity Repertory Company.  He is a current Board member of Bradley Hospital, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum, Friends of the South Ferry Church, Tides Family Services, Common Cause and the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole Massachusetts. 

A veteran of the Navy from the Korean War, Dowling is a board certified ophthalmologist and The Rhode Island Eye Institute’s founder, focusing his practice on primary care ophthalmology. He is a senior staff member at both Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital, where he previously spent 15 years as Director of Ophthalmology. He also works as an ophthalmology consultant for both Butler Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital and is an Assistant Clinical Professor (Emeritus) at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, a trustee emeritus of Brown University, and the author of numerous original publications. Dowling is the co-author of a book entitled “Vision” to be published in April.
