R.I. wins only U.S. stop on 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race

The epic, global Volvo Ocean Race will sail into Newport, Rhode Island, in 2015 for 11 to 12 days. The 65-foot sail boats are due to arrive at Fort Adams in late April or early May; this is the first time Newport has hosted the race, and the event is expected to be larger, and draw more visitors, than last year’s America’s Cup World Series Race.

Hitting some of the world’s largest sailing cities, the race will begin in Alicante, Spain, sailing south to Recife, Brazil, and rounding the tip of Africa to head north to the recently announced port of Abu Dhabi. From there, the race will continue to Auckland, New Zealand, and its second Brazilian stop in Itajai before arriving in Newport. After leaving Rhode Island, the boats will head to Lisbon, Portugal – the most recently announced port – with the finish in Gothenburg, Sweden. There are a total of nine legs in the race, spanning nine months. Additional stops will be announced in the coming weeks.

Statewide Sustainable Communities Initiative moves forward

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee aims to develop a comprehensive economic development plan – an integrated approach for land use, transportation, housing and economic development – in Rhode Island over the next two years. The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) and Statewide Planning took a huge first step forward in this state-wide plan by recently releasing two reports analyzing Rhode Island’s economic development and social equity.

Statewide Planning received a $1.9M Sustainable Communities grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which led to this collaboration on economic data collection and analysis.

Marijuana Decriminalization Law Takes Effect MONDAY in Rhode Island

Marijuana Decriminalization Law Takes Effect MONDAY in Rhode Island

Criminal penalties for simple marijuana possession will be replaced with a civil fine similar to a traffic ticket

Statement below from the Marijuana Policy Project

PROVIDENCE – Possession of small amounts of marijuana will no longer carry criminal penalties in Rhode Island when a law adopted last year officially takes effect on Monday.

S 2253/ H 7092, sponsored by Sen. Josh Miller and Rep. John “Jay” Edwards and signed into law by Gov. Lincoln Chafee last June, replaces criminal penalties for possession of up to one ounce of marijuana with a $150 civil fine similar to a traffic ticket. If the offender is under the age of 18, his or her parents or legal guardians will be notified and he or she will be required to complete an alcohol and drug education course, as well as perform community service, in addition to the fine. Fifty percent of the fines collected by the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal will be directed toward drug education and treatment programs.

Rhode Island joins 13 other states around the country that have adopted marijuana "decriminalization" laws. Voters in two additional states, Washington and Colorado, have approved measures to regulate and tax marijuana like alcohol for adults 21 and older. Decriminalization bills have been introduced in nine states this year. Additionally, bills to regulate and tax marijuana like alcohol have been introduced in nine states.

Statement from Robert Capecchi, Deputy Director of State Policies for the Marijuana Policy Project, which lobbied in support of S 2253/H 7092:

"We applaud the legislature and Gov. Chafee for answering Rhode Islanders' call for a more sensible marijuana policy. Nobody should be subject to life-altering criminal penalties simply for using a substance that is objectively less harmful than alcohol.

"There is still work to be done and we are pleased to see there is growing support among legislators for more comprehensive marijuana policy reform. Until marijuana is regulated and taxed similarly to alcohol, sales will remain uncontrolled, and they will continue to prop up drug cartels instead of legitimate Rhode Island businesses. Repealing criminal penalties for marijuana possession slows the bleeding, but repealing marijuana prohibition will heal the wound."

Introducing... Jamie Oliver at Home

Jamie Oliver At Home is a Rhode Island start-up based on the successful UK home party business led by Jamie Oliver, celebrity chef and best selling author.  After becoming aware of Jamie during his Food Revolution television series, CEO Tim Brown was impressed by Jamie's passion for educating people about how to eat better food, and live better lives.
With Tim's leadership background in the direct sales industry, he pursued a partnership with the Jamie Oliver and his team, and is currently launching this social business model in 2013 here in the US. The JOAH team - based in Hope Artiste Village, in Pawtucket, RI - plans to build on the awareness driven by the Food Revolution movement and carry the "Better Food Better Life" mission to homes across America on a daily basis.

AND Urban Greens

Urban Greens Food Co-op is working to open a full-scale consumer-owned cooperative grocery store on Providence’s west side, to provide direct access to affordable, local, and healthy products.
Consumer Co-ops benefit both the individual member-owners and the broader community:
● Members get to have a direct say in the food they’re eating, and the store they shop at, as well as financial benefits in the form of member sales, bulk ordering, and patronage dividends.
● The Community benefits because more dollars are kept in the community to circulate locally, and the coop will be sourcing heavily from local producers, creating more affordable, healthier, and tastier food options.

Why FACES?

  • Meet some of RI's leading social entrepreneurs
  • Create new collaborations
  • Learn about opportunities in the growing social venture sector
  • Meet community and business leaders who are suporting social ventures

Join FACES!

Contact us if you:
  • want to become a FACE (you are a social entrepreneur and want to be featured in our growing community).
  • want to present at an upcoming event (each month we will feature a different venture).
  • want to join the growing social enterprise movement as a mentor or volunteer.
