The Breakers, The Elms & Marble House Open Daily for the Season February 15

The quiet days of winter are a perfect time to visit theThe Breakers Great HallNewport Mansions, without the summertime crowds. And this year, your opportunities are even greater, as we begin offering daily tours earlier than ever before. The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House will all be open for daily tours from February 15 on.  Until then, The Breakers is open daily, with The Elms and Marble House open on weekends.

During Newport Winter Festival, February 15-24, show your Winter Festival button at any of the houses and receive a $2 discount on your ticket purchase.  Children under 18 accompanied by an adult with a button will be admitted free.

Winter Antiques Show a Huge Success

The 59th annual Winter Antiques Show in New York City was a huge success, with the Preservation Society's loan exhibition, Newport: The Glamour of Ornament, receiving rave reviews both from attendees and from the press. Watch video coverage of the Show from WPRI-TV Providence. 

Winter Lecture Series Begins

The Preservation Society's annual Winter Lecture Series kicks off this week and features a variety of speakers on collections, preservation and research.

Paradise Revisited
February 6, Rosecliff, 11 a.m.

Deemed the "Eden of America" in the late 18th century, Newport's scenic beauty has attracted generations of artists seeking to capture the natural splendor of Aquidneck Island's landscape.  Join Preservation Society Public Policy Fellow Kaity Ryan for an illustrated lecture that will explore the rich history of Paradise Valley through paintings, photographs and literature.


The Meaning of Cartography
February 13, Rosecliff, 11 a.m.

Cartographic Art Historian Christina Connett of the Rhode Island School of Design will look at a selection of different types of historic maps, their uses and the powerful impact they have on our relationship with space.



Six Degrees of Separation; Newport's Craftsmen Community
February 27, Rosecliff, 11 a.m.  

Prominently situated in the historic Point District, Hunter House (1748) exhibits the work of some of the most important 18th century Newport craftsmen. Preservation Society Decorative Arts Fellow Alice Dickinson will use its collections to examine the social connections of artisans through the objects they created.
  
Admission to each lecture is free for Preservation Society members, $5 for the general public. Advance registration is requested.

Easter Egg Hunt Tickets Now on Sale

Reservations are now being accepted from PreservationEaster Bunny at RosecliffSociety members for the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch at Rosecliff, Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m.   This event sells out quickly, so don't wait to purchase your tickets. If available, tickets will go on sale to the general public on February 25.

John Tschirch to Speak at Newport Art Museum

The Preservation Society's John Tschirch, ArchitecturalJohn TschirchHistorian and Director of Museum Affairs, will be part of the Newport Art Museum's Winter Speaker Series on Saturday, February 9. His lecture, Newport as a Model of Urban Living: New Lessons From Old Cities, will showcase the results of intensive research on five historic cities that points the way to achieving sensible, pragmatic, yet artistic urban rebirth. Lecture begins at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow.

The 21st annual Newport Symposium, April 28 to May 1, 2013, will explore the rarest and finest objects from all corners of the globe, with lectures that examine the most remote, hard-to-see historic sites, and the remarkable stories of art treasures that have been lost and then reclaimed.

Admission to the Symposium is $500 for Preservation Society members; $550 for non-members; and $150 for students (student price valid for lectures only & requires proof of enrollment). Scholarships are available for museum professionals and graduate students.
