一代电影明星阮玲玉的一生波折辛酸，由璀璨的荧幕生涯到黯然的个人生活，皆成为后世怀念与争论不休的话题。其与张达民、唐季珊、蔡楚生的感情纠葛亦让人唏嘘不已。本片导演关锦鹏以记录片的拍摄方式，穿插阮玲玉女士的原片与张曼玉饰演的画面交织，又附着老影人的采访与演员张曼玉自己的感受，创造出了时空变换的美感与意境。“人言可畏”，一句经典绝语，让人不禁为一代玉人年仅25岁便香消玉殒的一生深思惋惜。
张曼玉凭借此片获得1992年柏林国际电影节最佳女演员奖。

<Center Stage> is based on the true story of the first generation actress, Ruan Lingyu in Chinese film history. It recounts her life both public and private in the years of 1930s leading up to her suicide at age 25. The film cuts between present scenes of Maggie Cheung playing Ruan Lyingyu and extracts from Ruan’s original films, as well as documentary footage with Maggie Cheung and interviews of senior directors and actors.
Maggie Cheung won Best Actress award at Berlin International Film Festival in 1992 for her delicate portraiture of Ruan.
