Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School
invites you to join us in a special event: Introduction to traditional
Chinese music and instruments, presented by renowned erhu/banhu master, Zhao Zhi-Min. Master Zhao will introduce four groups of instruments used in a Chinese orchestra: Bowed string (erhu/banhu/gaohu/jinghu, etc.), bamboo wind (Dizi/Hulusi, etc.), plucked string (guzheng/yangqin, etc.) and percussion instruments, with music performance by Master Zhao and his students from Zhao Zhi-Min Chinese Music School.
Zhao Zhi-Min started learning bamboo flute
(dizi) and erhu (Chinese violin) at the age of six. He further
developed his talent at erhu and other traditional Chinese instruments,
banhu, zhonghu,jJinghu, gauhu, studying with Master Liu Ming Yuan, one
of the most famous traditional Chinese folk music performers and a renowned composer. In his homeland, he earned first place in several nationwide contests. Zhao Zhi-Min's formidable technique and skill have secured him an international reputation as a talented interpreter of traditional Chinese music. Zhao Zhi-Min came to the United
States in 1985 and played in the Chinese Folk Music Orchestra of New York as Erhu/Banhu soloist and concert master until 1998. In 1998, he moved to Boston and formed the Chinese Traditional Music School in 2000. Since then, he continues to mentor ErHu students, training a new generation of outstanding Chinese musical talent.
This presentation is free and open to public.
