Welcome Center Review Moves Forward

The Newport Zoning Board will take up the final regulatory step to complete approval of The Breakers welcome center on September 29 & 30 at the Pell School.  It's critically important that friends of the Preservation Society be on hand to observe the process and show their support. The Preservation Society is asking that a special use permit, which already exists for the vending machine refreshment shed on the grounds, be amended and the site plan revised so that several museum operations--including ticketing, information and educational displays, bathrooms, and refreshments--can be consolidated into a state of the art Welcome Center.

Please come and show your support on September 29 & 30.  The Newport Zoning Board meeting will take place at6:30 p.m. at the Pell School, 35 Dexter Street in Newport.
No Park Service Review of Welcome Center

J. Paul Loether, Chief, National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks, wrote yesterday "the implementation of the current proposal of the Preservation Society of Newport County to construct a new visitors center within the boundaries of The Breakers NHL does not require approval by the National Park Service (NPS)."  Click here to read the correspondence.
Breakers Landmark Designation to be Enhanced

The National Park Service (NPS) is interested in capturing much more information about The Breakers caretaker's cottage, the underground boiler room, and the property's landscape features to further enhance the designation of The Breakers as a National Historic Landmark, a move that is actively supported by the Preservation Society.

J. Paul Loether, Chief, National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks, wrote to the Preservation Society that "The effort by the NPS to initiate the process of updating the historic documentation for The Breakers as a whole is focused solely on ensuring that said documentation is as thorough, accurate, and current as possible."

Updating a designation can take as long as 1.5 to 2 years.  At this point, there is no timetable for revising the designation.  Click here to read the correspondence.

Green Animals Helps to Feed Local Families

Visitors to Green Animals know that it includes a small vegetable garden that is reminiscent of the original garden that supplied produce for the Brayton family. Today, that garden is still cultivated regularly by staff and volunteers, to the benefit of a local women's shelter. To date this summer, Lucy's Hearth has received more than 400 pounds of vegetables from the Green Animals garden!

The present study developed and assessed reliability and validity of a new instrument, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS). Based on a review of the literature, 44 items thought to be important for intercultural sensitivity were generated for the purpose of analyses in this study. A sample of 414 college students rated these items and generated a 24-item final version of the instrument which contains five factors. An assessment of concurrent validity from 162 participants indicated that the ISS was significantly correlated with other related scales, including interaction attentiveness, impression rewarding, self-esteem, self-monitoring, and perspective taking. In addition, the predicted validity test from 174 participants showed that individuals with high ISS scores also scored high in intercultural effectiveness and intercultural communication attitude scales. Potential limitations and future direction for the study in this line of research were discussed as well.

State Arts Council Announces New Art on Display at T.F. Green Airport Gallery

State Arts Council Announces New Art on Display at T.F. Green Airport Gallery

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) announced today that a new art exhibition, entitled THE GREATER WHOLE, will be held from September 12, 2014 through January 2, 2015 at GREEN SPACE, an art gallery at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick that presents the work of contemporary Rhode Island artists.

The exhibition presents works by Ben Watkins, Ben Blanc and Troy West. Watkins and Blanc present their works in multiples or assemblages to create a larger whole, while West presents a body of work which collectively forms a pictorial history.  The ancient quote by Aristotle, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, is particularly apt in reference to the works by these three artists.

Much like a parade of scientific specimens, Ben Watkins’ installation Time Line features multiple small reliefs arranged off of a center axis. Each relief depicts a single form or line, executed in pristine white plaster; the absence of color allows each form to take center stage. Displayed collectively, the work becomes encyclopedic, showcasing the possibilities of sculptural relief. Among other honors, Watkins is the 2015 recipient the RISCA Fellowship in three-dimensional art.

Ben Blanc’s sculptural works use the repetition of shape to create new experiences. His grouping, Graphite Pendant Lights creates three different variations simply by rotating one shape. In his freestanding sculpture Cloud, individual translucent forms are combined to create a collected mass of shape and color. Blanc is a visiting faculty member in furniture design at RISD, and has exhibited his sculptural and functional objects both nationally and internationally.

Troy West has had a lifelong fascination with the abandoned mill buildings of New England. Executed exclusively on site, each individual drawing has a passionate, obsessive quality. Exhibited as a group, the work documents a part of New England history; A record of each site individually, as well as the bygone economy they represent. As an architect, artist and sculptor, West has exhibited widely and received numerous accolades in a career spanning over 50 years.

The artists were selected for exhibition by an accomplished panel:  Sam Duket, artist and former GREEN SPACE exhibitor; Ellen McBreen, art historian and professor at Wheaton College and Victoria Lichtendorf, Director of Education at Storm King Art Center.

GREEN SPACE, a partnership between the Rhode Island Council on the Arts and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, promotes outstanding work by artists living and working in Rhode Island.  The gallery presents art to an ever-changing audience of local, national and international travelers.  GREEN SPACE is located in the airport terminal where the skywalk meets the main building.  Art is exhibited on both levels of the terminal.

            Stan Tran
