Mayor Fung urges residents to take threat of Hurricane Irene seriously

Cranston, RI – Mayor Fung has been working closely with Cranston Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator William McKenna, his staff, and RI EMA in preparation for the heavy rains and windy conditions that Hurricane Irene will bring. Another internal coordination meeting will be held this morning at 10 AM to finalize the city response plan.

Mayor Fung is urging the residents of Cranston to continue the necessary planning and preparation involved with the potential impact of Hurricane Irene. “I can’t stress enough the importance of taking seriously this storm’s potential devastation and the key for all of us is preparation,” stated Mayor Fung.

In order to assist residents with questions, Mayor Fung announced that as of today at 12:00 PM, the Cranston Storm Information Hot-line will be available to residents with questions about the approaching storm. The hot-line will be staffed by Fire Department members and Community Emergency Response Team members who will have the most current information available regarding the status of the storm, the openings of any shelters, and any evacuation plans if required.

Sandbags are also being distributed to Cranston residents and are available at our Department of Public Works, 935 Phenix Avenue (401-942-9200). Residents must show an identification verifying their residence. Each resident is limited to a total of 10 sandbags and businesses are limited to a total of 20.
