Mid-Autumn Festival Oct. 2 celebrates China's Great Wall with photo exhibition, presentation about ancient site's conservation


SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant University celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, by putting a spotlight on one of the wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the University's U.S.-China Institute and Confucius Institute,with special sponsorship from the Preservation Society of Newport County.

The festival includes talks by two of China's leading archaeologists, an exhibition of photographs taken by award-winning photographer Zhou Wanping(周萬萍), samples of Great Wall red wine and moon cakes, and selection of winners of a China photo competition (details below).

Schedule for Mid-Autumn Festival Tuesday, Oct. 2


3:30-4:30 p.m., Unistructure room MRC 4: Lecture presented by Dr. Wang Hui, director of the Gansu Province Cultural Relic Department and part-time professor/researcher at Lanzhou University. Dr. Wang is known for his research with the Dun Huang Yuan Quan excavation program, considered one of the top 10 Chinese archaeology discoveries. More than 20,000 relics were discovered, giving insight into Chinese paper-making technique, ethnic culture on the Silk Road, and the postal system of the Han Dynasty.
6 p.m., Unistructure, Janikies Auditorium: A 30-minute talk (in Chinese with English translation) by Dr. Yang Lin,director of the Archeology Department at the National Museum of China. While working under the State Cultural Relic Bureau, Dr. Yang was special coordinator and vice-captain of the Ping Shuo archeology team with one of the major capital construction procedures in He Nan Province. With the Shanxi Province archeology team and the History Museum of China archeology team, they have excavated over 1,000 sites from the Warring State of China (c.a. 475 BCE-221 BCE) and Qin Dynasty (221 BCE-207 BCE), recovering countless cultural relics. Dr. Yang is distinguished for his application of geographical information systems (GIS) in remote sensing and aerial archeology, particularly in archeological survey, ground localization through GPS, and space calculation and analysis through the role of 3D technology. His research and methodologies have been applied in the study of several major early cultural sites, including ancient cities and the Great Wall.
6:30-8:30 p.m. (est.): Bryant's Dragon Dance Team leads guests to the Bello Center for Information and Technology to view an extensive exhibition of Great Wall photographs taken by award-winning photographer Zhou Wanping, a long-time photographer of China’s Great Wall. A collection of his photography is available in the albumMy Hometown – Gubeikou, Jinshanling, and Simatai Sections of the Great Wall. His works have won many prizes, including the 2nd prize at the International World Heritage Photo Competition organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1998.

Guests will also have the opportunity to view submissions to a China photo competition (details below) and select the winner. Moon cakes, Great Wall red wine, tea and other light snacks will be available.

This contest is open to the public.

All submitted photos will be displayed together with the Great Wall photo exhibition. Participants at the Mid-Autumn Festival will select the winner, which will be announced at the end of the event.

The photo must have been taken in China by the person who is submitting, and has to be original photo without any editing or special camera effects.The photo needs to be electronically submitted in an email attachment to bryantuschinainstitute@gmail.com by Sept. 26. The file format should be JPEG and the file size should be over 500 KB.In the email submission, please include the following:

Mayor Fung’s Statement on the

Cranston School Department’s Ban on Father-Daughter dances

Cranston, R.I.- I am utterly disappointed to have such a time-honored tradition under attack in the name of political correctness. Traditions like this are what make up the fabric of our childhood memories and definitely contribute to the well being of our children as a whole.

In the zeal to protect people who feel they are being disenfranchised, this policy has completely denied our children of one of the most cherished traditions in their school experience. I sympathize with these parents because it seems once again that Cranston is at the epicenter of another attack on our traditions by the ACLU.

I have been flooded with calls from angry parents upset with the Cranston School Department’s decision to ban gender specific events like the Father-Daughter dances in Cranston. Although I do not have any legal authority over the issue, I implore the Cranston School Committee to review this decision and find a way to make this work for the children and their parents.

I encourage all parents that are upset with this decision to contact their school committee members and make their voices be heard.

九月八日賽龍舟

楊洪升任布萊恩特大學副校長

羅州布萊恩特(Bryant)大學日前宣佈，該校美中研究所暨孔子學院主任楊洪，獲聘為該校國際事務副校長。

楊洪因此成為該校六名副校長之一，以及紐英崙地區美國大專院校的第二位華裔副校長。

紐英崙地區大專院校的第一位華裔副校長，是溫沃斯(Wenworth)理工學院2007年上任，現已卸任的蔡桂伍。

布萊恩特大學校長梅恪禮已於七月發電郵通知校內教職員，校方也已於八月在網站上公佈這訊息。楊洪的優先要務將為計劃並協辦布萊恩特大學珠海分校，在布萊恩特大學及中國之間，建立更強有力的雙向教育交流。

四川柳橋小學今夏學英語

羅德島州廿幾名熱心華人，七月十至十七日間，組團前往中國四川省，為廣元市元垻區柳橋羅德島僑愛學校124名營員，舉辦RISE英語夏令營。

       一週七天，每天從早上八點至晚上九點半，行程滿檔，學生們收獲豐富，義工老師們累得開心。

       在這七天中，營員經過第一、第二天的適應及準備期，瞭解英語營內容概要，聆聽了基本的美國生活介紹，並藉集體遊戲，欣賞羅德島州天才秀，打破了學員與老師義工們彼此間的陌生距離後，開始過「一家人」的生活，每天吃完早餐演話劇，再上英語課，學習美國的七月四日國慶、總統日、聖誕節、感恩節、復活節等節慶與文化、習俗，接著做健身操、再上課，下午進行球賽、舞蹈與手工藝活動，晚上舉行燒烤會、營火會、電影會、學生天才表演，分組表演等活動，日子過得好快，學了好多。

       義工中的周麗華，寫有英文的夏令營日記。根據她的日記，第三天，RISE的義工老師們把美國慶祝獨立日由來，講給向小營員們聽，還嚐試在史實說明之外，盡力解釋，七月四日這天美國慶祝獨立建國，背後蘊含著美國人追求自由的生活觀。

       那天下午的跳舞課，原本安排在戶外兩個半小時，但天氣太熱，才過四40分鐘，柳橋學校老師就擔心學生中暑。RISE老師們其實也熱得受不了，順勢把活動改為戶內唱歌、看電影「玩具故事(Toys Story)」。每個小朋友都很合作、聽話，老師要求什麼，都照單全收。

       小休時，營員們和羅州RISE義工們彼此拍照、分享照片、聊天、打籃球、玩遊戲，水乳交融的打成一片。柳橋小學營員都十分好學，問了許多問題。

       為了晚上的燒烤晚會，葉超叔叔帶頭做準備，從老遠的地方運來一應用具。RISE義工們準備漢堡時，礙於材料限制，遇到許多挑戰，葉叔叔發揮巧思及無限精力，想出許多辦法。他在學校廚房員工協助下，絞碎買來的肉，又到當地烘焙店買來高品質奶油包，權充包漢堡的麵包，再配上洗淨的生菜、20罐沒適當工具還真不容易打開來的罐裝蕃茄醬，以及在學校廚房自製的炸薯條。大家還從市場買來只有翅尖的雞翅膀，配上預存在冰箱裏的罐裝冷凍可樂、百事可樂，以及西瓜。

       負責監管營區活動的副校長在報告中形容，”今天非常特別，一群來自美國的人，很努力的把愛帶來。我們這些鄉村孩子們還是第一次有機會吃到漢堡和炸薯條。我們非常感恩”。

一名父親是學校負責政治教育老師的十一歲女孩，在日記上寫下”今天那麼美好，我們吃到非常豐富的美式燒烤食物，有漢堡、炸薯條、雞翅膀。我們全都很滿足、快樂。此刻，我心充滿感恩之情”。

       營火會那晚，營員們升起七堆營火。每一組圍火而坐，各自玩遊戲，分享心情故事，就著火烤棉花糖，沾巧克力，和著餅干一起吃，好有趣。

       124名營員還情不自禁唱起「感恩的心」這首歌。大家聽著「我來自偶然像一顆尘土，有誰看出我的脆弱，我來自何方，我情歸何處，誰在下一刻呼喚我…」這些歌詞，好感觸。

羅州功夫團今夏好忙碌

羅州功夫團今夏忙路忙碌，既到波士頓參加國際中國武術大賽，也到了康州，參加美國全國功夫聯盟賽，以及紐英崙功夫大賽。許多團員獲得大獎，來自全國各地的老師也紛紛稱讚團員們身手了得，有禮貌。

該團今年還應邀為康州哈特福(Hartford)市的龍舟賽及亞裔節，麻州波士頓華埠的中秋節聯歡會，以及麻州昆士市的第25屆中秋節聯歡會表演舞獅。

URI孔子學院辦中文教師培訓 8/24-26上課免費

羅德島大學孔子學院將於八月廿四日至廿六日，每日早上九點至下午四點，在該校京士頓(Kingston)校園的霍夫曼廊天鵝廳(112 Swan Hall, 60 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881)，舉行中國語文老師培訓班，主題為「漢語教材教學活動和課堂練習」，講師包括波士頓公校世界語主任林遊嵐，紐約CUNY大學Barach學院John Yu，以及佛蒙特大學佛利曼基金會的Juefei Wang等人和羅德島大學的中文教職員。上課免費，供應早午餐，以及旅費補助。從外州到羅德島州參加活動者，可住在該校學生宿舍內，若要求住單人房，需繳交每日15元。須於八月廿日前，向羅德島大學孔子學院Qian Xie報名，聯繫可洽uricimail@gmail.com。

馮偉杰獲ILF頒獎表揚

新成立的國際領袖基金會(ILF)紐英崙分會日前組團前往華府，參加ILF頒獎晚會，以及ILF與亞美商會聯盟(Coalition of Asian American Business Organizations)合辦的領袖及商務會議，為羅州亞裔踏出拓展全國性關係網的第一步。

            ILF日前在華府首都希爾頓酒店舉行的頒獎晚會，邀得曾任中華民國副總統，不久前才獲馬英九總統指派為台灣出席本年度亞太經合會(APEC)代表的連戰擔任主講人。包括曾任美國勞工部部長的趙小蘭，曾任美國運輸部部長的峰田良雄(Norman Mineta)，美國聯邦眾議員趙美心，加州政府主計長江俊輝，以及駐美國台北經濟文化代表處袁健生，亞美商會聯盟共同主席，曾獲福布斯亞洲雜誌評為美國商業界最值得注意的25名華裔美人之一的威特(Waitex)集團主席李學海(Howard Li)等人列席為貴賓。

            克蘭斯頓(Cranston)市市長馮偉傑當晚也獲表揚，從ILF理事長陳銘達手中領得金球獎。當晚同獲表揚者包括亞太公共事務聯盟(APAPA)創辦人尹集成，美國翔茂地產開發公司總裁孔慶超等人。

            成立已十餘年的國際領袖基金會，今年一月才在熱心人士支持下，組成紐英崙分會，共有羅州地產發展商葉超、吳子平，克蘭斯頓(Cranston)市市長馮偉傑，黑石谷旅遊協會會長畢靈頓(Bob Biilington)、華美銀行新英格蘭地區總監葉俊年、普域敦斯學院教授萬寅生、大都會保險公司資深經紀暨餐館東主劉有成、經營產品開發公司的黃樺等加入ILF顧問團，在拓展商機，鼓勵參政，培訓青年等各方面，貢獻力量。

            ILF紐英崙分會成員出席的這場ILF與亞美商會聯盟(Coalition of Asian American Business Organizations)所合辦領袖及商務會議，有二場著眼於全球策略聯盟、支持亞裔商業的座談。

白宮商會(White House Business Council)行政主任Ari Matusiak是其中一場的主講者。他強調，該會是白宮層次為商業界提供協助、解讀資訊的機構。商界人士可利用www.businessusa.gov這網站，查找許多有用資訊。www.whitehouse.gov/economy則有許多與經濟方面的有關資訊。

美國商務部少數族裔商務發展局(Minority Business Development Agency)全國主任David Hinson，是駱家輝在擔任商務部長期間引進的官員。他強調，亞裔不但是過去十年來美國內人口成長最快速的族群，也是創造美國就業機會比率最高的族群。去年美國新增的六百萬個工作機會中，就有約50%是亞裔公司創造的。他鼓勵亞裔積極參加該機構每年辦理，今年將在九月廿五日舉行的少數族裔商業發展週會議(The National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week Conferenc)。

現年34歲的鍾子威，畢業於哈佛大學，現為科斯拉(Khosla)這坐擁數十億元資金創投公司的執行合夥人。他主要負責該公司的中國業務，對教育、清潔能源、網路、移動通訊特別有興趣，指諸如中國一家回收廢氣，轉化成能源的顛覆現狀科技，前景最是看好。

在四個國家擁有20家麥當勞快餐店的尹集成，強調華人必須參與公眾事務，才能提升華人在美加等國的形象、地位。他因此創辦亞太公共事務聯盟(APAPA)。他勸喻亞裔要成為社區的一份子，也要藉著參與公共事務，成為政府的一部份。

加州主計長江俊輝指出，美國絕大多數的大企業，高階主管仍是白人天下。他本人是成員之一，由數個大規模投資集團組成的CalPERS，和CalSTRS，正在推動成立多元指南資料庫(Diverse Directory Database)，徵集具有能力亞裔或少數族裔人士遞進履表，以期在CalPERS，和CalSTRS麾下的公司出現機會時，藉著該集團是股東之一的身份，指派更多亞裔、少數族裔進大公司的董事局，既改善這些公司的經營表現，也改變美國企業界管理層的整體形象。

ILF紐英崙分會接待國際青年大使

國際領袖基金會(ILF)的58名國際青年大使，廿日來到紐英崙，早上在羅德島州試當州議員，下午在麻州聽哈佛學者講課，晚上和麻州黃素芬、黃子安兩位華裔民代交流，享用龍蝦大餐，廿二日已轉赴華府，繼續行程。

      國際領袖基金會是個創辦於十多年前，以推動亞裔參與公共事務決策，從事公共服務，加強公民認知，發展社區經濟為目標的非牟利組織。培訓亞裔大學生成為未來領袖是該會的主要活動之一。

      該會今年的國際青年大使團，包括上海29人，北京21人，台灣8人，共有58人，從七月十六日起至廿八日，依序在紐約、普域敦斯、劍橋、華府等地，進行為期兩週的培訓、考察。

      國際領袖基金會執行主任董繼玲與該會全球關係主任徐薇薇(Stephanie Shei)，青年大使協調員Kevin Wong等人，廿日帶隊從紐約抵達紐英崙。

      第一站是參觀羅州議會。ILF紐英崙顧問團的葉超、吳子平、萬寅生、黃樺等人為青年大使們安排了和羅州議員米樂，以及羅州唯一的華裔市長，克蘭斯頓市市長馮偉杰(Allan Fung)等晤談的活動。青年大使們在羅州議會廳舉行了一場模擬議會辯論，就死刑、同性戀婚姻、墮胎等在美國極具爭議性的三項問題進行投票，結果竟以大比數差距通過三案。董繼玲，以及刻任羅州普域敦斯學院教授的萬寅生等人都說，青年大使們的辯論表現，竟令羅州議員也為之動容，聲稱有些學生的表現，甚至比議員還好。

      ILF青年大使們廿日下午抵達麻州，先聽哈佛大學甘迺迪政府學院學者William Overhult講課三小時，瞭解「亞洲經濟奇蹟及東北亞未來」，再在晚上和費奇堡市長黃素芬、麻州眾議員黃子安晤面，聽聽亞裔在美從政的經驗。

      今年三十二歲，已三度連任費奇堡市長的黃素芬指出，亞裔父母從生活著想，總是鼓勵子女學醫習法或從商，不要特立獨行的引人矚目，以致歷年來鮮少有亞裔參選民代或公職，但政府是為人民服務，也是權力很大，能直接改善人民生活品質的機構。過往亞裔極少參政，原因包括要安靜，別惹事生非的傳統文化觀念，不善於在公眾面前發言、表達己見，新移民來到美國後，仍然只和自己熟悉的族群來往等。黃素芬以她自己的經歷為例，鼓勵亞裔參與政治，為亞裔，更為廣大民眾發聲。

黃素芬透露當年她在費市擔任重建局主任時，經常向市長提意見，卻不得要領，才興起不如自己來當市長的念頭。努力以赴，真當選後，她發現，在位者的確可以做許多事，包括改善教育，振興地方，修改區域規劃，為小企業創造更多繁榮機會等。

當晚後半段才抵達會場的黃子安，簡述了自己的背景，從政的經過。黃子安坦言自己是第三代在美華人，家族經營的九龍餐廳已有62年歷史，從最開始只有24個座位，成長到可容1200人，其間過程是典型的美國夢，只要努力就有所成。

他的從政之路，一開始是當鎮議員。他的平日積極參與慈善工作，擔任地方小聯盟教練等，讓他儘管之前沒有參政經驗，卻仍能在亞裔居民極少的索格斯(Saugus)鎮以最高票當選。由於餐廳業是服務業，和議員得為選民服務類似，都要懂得、願意聆聽客戶/選民的意見，當選議員後，他適應得很快。其後參選州議員，也情況類似。不過為了讓所謂的主流社會對亞裔保持好印象，他坦言自己總是儘量加倍努力，也因此儘管他是新科州議員，卻能擠身麻州議會財政委員會(Ways and Means Committee)。

來自兩岸的青年大使中，有不少人是第一次來美國。來自台灣交大法律研究所的廖捷如覺得，親眼看見美國華僑，生活化了在課本中讀到的一些歷史，美國的國土廣闊，紐約街頭人們行色匆匆，也和她到歐洲時見到的社會景觀差別很大，整個行程很受啟發。

廖捷如還表示，想到黃素芬市長才32歲，自己卻已24歲，不免興起得加快腳步，更加奮發向上的感觸。

之前已在哈佛大學教育學院就讀的青年大使團成員朱波則指出，黃素芬市長的有意見要懂得表達，想做事得主動爭取的講話，啟發了許多學生追問她如何處理市政，遇到過些什麼狀況。她們對聽到一席這麼具有激勵性的講話，感到很興奮。

復旦大學國際文化交流學院對外漢語教師趙靜，復旦大學柏露、上海財經大學方茜等青年大使也都表示，很高興有機會和在美從政亞裔面對面晤談。

ILF青年大使團昨(廿三)日在華府參加商務部的培訓，將陸續拜會美國財政部、和ILF美國學者晤談，參加「美國─亞洲策略經濟論壇」會議，參觀白宮後，返回各自家園。

布朗和浙大、成大醫學院學生交流

美國大專院校和中國大陸及台灣的院校合作、交流，早就不是新鮮事。同一學校內的同一院系，同時和大陸、台灣分別辦有合作、交流計劃的卻不多。羅德島州布朗大學醫學院在路可(Luke)基金會贊助下，成為先猷。

            布朗與中國浙江大學醫學院的國際中醫交流項目，是五年前由布朗大學Alpet醫學院國際醫學系訪問學生副院長(Associate Dean of Medicine for Visiting International Medical Students of Alpert Medical School)Julianne Ip提出來的，徵得路可基金會贊助後，訂定布朗與浙大兩校，各以每次兩人，一年共選送六名學生的方式，進行交流，開拓學生眼界，擴展其生活及行醫經驗。

            第一年舉辦後，有浙大學生表示，美國醫院醫生和病患之間的相處有如朋友方式，醫護人員十分尊重病患隱私及要求等行為，令人印象極深刻。布朗大學學生Jack Cossman則在到訪杭州兩個月後，為布朗的該項目草擬的一份準則。指出到浙大中醫學院交流，是羅州有心學中醫者的最佳途徑。到浙大交流的學生會住在國際保健中心，可選修四週到六週的課程。

            路可基金會透露，這醫學院學生交流計劃第一年舉辦時，就贏得家長稱讚。一名來自香港學生的家長Hong Chang Pang，還因項目辦得好，慷慨捐出一百萬元給布朗大學，以支持長期舉辦這交流項目。

            布朗大學醫學院附屬婦女及嬰兒醫院病理系教授，曾以馬來西亞華僑身份在台灣進修的宋健人，第二年起為布朗大學和成功大學牽線，辦起布朗和成大的醫學院學生交流項目，也經由路可基金會的每月一千元，最高一千五百元的贊助，每年各選四名學生互訪兩個月。布朗大學的學生可經由成功大學家庭醫藥/鄉鎮醫藥部，參加社區健康研究項目。

            據悉，成大醫學院和世界各地多所院校辦有交流計劃，但學生們偏愛申請與布朗交流的這項目，原因是二個月間，他們不但學到知識，還享受到與羅德島華人社區互動的溫暖。

            今年，來自浙大和成功大學的醫學院交換學生，正好同時期在布朗大學進修，又遇上美國國慶日，應邀出席迦納團契、鄭心恩等人的團契活動，賞煙花、吃燒烤之餘，呈現一幕和布朗學生交流之外的兩岸學生熱絡交流美景。

            路可基金會成員包括葉超、吳子平、畢靈頓、宋秀珍等人，日前也特地舉辦第四屆醫學院交流項目餐會，宴請承辦交流項目的宋健人教授、Julianne Ip和浙江、成功、布朗大學參加項目的學生們。

Providence市免費早、午餐 18歲以下可享用

羅德島普域敦斯市刻正在市內多個地點，為兒童提供免費早餐、午餐。
該市公園及娛樂局和羅州教育廳攜手承辦這聯邦夏日食物服務項目。普域敦斯市市長Angel Taveras估計，將在全市31個地點，每日供應約五千份餐食。
任何年齡在十八歲以下的青少年兒童，都有資格享用，但必須在指定項目地點用餐，包括娛樂中心、游泳池、遊樂場等等。
這項目將在週一至週五間舉行，直至八月十七日止。

Free children's meal program running in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The city of Providence is running a free breakfast and lunch program for children at dozens of sites around the city.

The federal Summer Food Service Program for Children is administered by the city parks and recreation department and the state department of education. The office of Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) expects that about 5,000 meals will be provided daily at 31 sites throughout Providence.

Anyone 18 and younger is eligible. Meals must be eaten at the designated program locations, which include recreation centers, pools and playgrounds.

The program runs weekdays through Aug. 17

The Newport Music Festival celebrates its 44th season July 13–29, 2012, continuing the tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world-class artists and special events in the Newport Mansions. A Weekend of Coaching

Authentic 19th century coaches drawn by matched and highly-trained teams of horses will return to Newport this summer in the triennial renewal of a Weekend of Coaching, hosted by The Preservation Society of Newport County. The public will enjoy free viewing of the colorful and historic coaches every day, as they drive through the streets of Newport and the grounds of the Newport Mansions, celebrating and preserving a century-old sporting tradition. Approximately a dozen coaching teams will come to Newport from around the country

The routes of the daily drives will be published in the local press and the Preservation Society's website in early August. In addition, there will be a free-to-the-public driving exhibition on the grounds of The Elms starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 18.

The weekend will culminate with a formal Coaching Weekend Dinner Dance at The Breakers on Saturday evening.  Learn more about the dinner dance and how to make reservations.


The tradition of coaching grew out of the 18th and 19th century mail runs in England, which later made their way across the Atlantic to the United States. The horse-drawn mail coaches were eventually replaced by railroads, but nostalgia led to the development of coaching as a sport. The Coaching Club of New York was formed in the latter part of the 19th century, eventually becoming part of the social fabric of Newport in the summer. The Wetmores, the Bells, the Vanderbilts and the Belmonts were all active members, bringing their coaches together to go to the races, the polo games, and the Casino.

The two types of open-air vehicles used in the sport of coaching—a Road Coach and the slightly smaller Park Drag—employ a team of four horses. All seating is outside, with the driver, known as a "whip," sitting in the slightly elevated right front seat, and the whip’s wife or female relative taking up the “box seat” on the left. The rear bench of the coach holds at least two specialized footmen called grooms. Two center benches can hold up to 10 passengers.
